ERP vs Tally for Manufacturing (2026)

Tally is excellent accounting and GST software; a manufacturing ERP runs the whole business — sales, purchase, production, inventory, quality, HR and accounts — on one database. Manufacturers usually need ERP once BOMs, job work, batch tracking or multi-godown stock move into Excel. Many keep Tally’s strengths by migrating ledgers cleanly.

Who it is for: This guide is for Indian manufacturers running on Tally and Excel, typically above ₹10 crore turnover and growing, who want to know whether they have outgrown Tally.

Disclosure: Bsquare Solutions makes Pothera ERP, one of the options this guide discusses. We compare categories of ERP, not named vendors, and we say plainly where Pothera ERP is not the right fit.

Quick answer — stay on Tally or move to ERP?

Stay on Tally if Your main need is accounting and GST returns, production is simple, and stock is in one location.
Move to ERP if You plan production from BOMs, send material for job work, track batches or heats, run several godowns or plants, or need costing by order.
The hidden cost of staying Parallel Excel sheets, re-keyed invoices, stock that stores and accounts disagree on, and month-end that depends on one person.

Bsquare’s take

“Tally is not the problem. The problem is the twenty spreadsheets that grow around it once you start manufacturing at scale. ERP replaces the spreadsheets first — and the books become cleaner as a result.”

— Payal Nambiar, Managing Director & CEO, Bsquare Solutions

7 signs you have outgrown Tally

  1. Excel runs production: Plans, BOMs and work orders live in spreadsheets outside your books.
  2. Stock is argued about: Stores, production and accounts each have a different stock figure.
  3. Job work is a notebook: You cannot say instantly how much material sits with each job worker.
  4. Costing is a guess: You know company profit but not margin by order or product.
  5. Invoices are re-keyed: Sales orders are retyped into accounts to raise invoices and e-way bills.
  6. Month-end depends on one person: Closing the books needs a specific accountant and several days.
  7. Growth adds people, not control: Every new plant, godown or product line adds more manual reconciliation.

Three or more signs usually means ERP will pay for itself through fewer errors and faster decisions.

How to move from Tally to ERP safely

  1. Decide the cut-over dateUsually the start of a quarter or financial year.
  2. Clean mastersLedgers, items, BOMs, customers and suppliers — remove duplicates first.
  3. Migrate opening balancesLedger balances, open receivables and payables, stock by location and batch.
  4. Run in parallel brieflyReconcile one period before you switch off old entries.
  5. Go live by moduleSales, purchase and inventory first; production and costing next.

Frequently asked questions

Is Tally an ERP?

Tally is primarily accounting, inventory and GST software. It includes some ERP-like features, but it is not a full manufacturing ERP with production planning, MRP, quality control, CRM and multi-plant operations on one database.

When should a manufacturer move from Tally to ERP?

When production planning, BOM costing, job work, batch tracking or multi-godown stock are being managed in Excel alongside Tally. Most manufacturers reach this point between about ₹10 crore and ₹50 crore turnover.

Can I keep Tally and add an ERP?

You can, but running two systems means re-keying or integration, and two versions of the truth. Most manufacturers move accounting into the ERP so operations post to the books automatically.

How long does migration from Tally to ERP take?

Typically 8–12 weeks for a small or medium manufacturer, including master clean-up, opening balances, parallel running and training. Several plants or heavy customisation take longer.

Will I lose my Tally data when I move to ERP?

No. Masters, opening balances and open transactions are migrated, and historical Tally data stays available for reference and audit.

Is ERP more expensive than Tally?

The licence is higher, but the comparison that matters is total cost: spreadsheets, re-keying, stock errors and slow month-ends. Manufacturing ERPs are usually quoted per requirement; Pothera ERP is quoted after a demo on your process.
