BOM Software: Multi-Level Bill of Materials for Manufacturers

Pothera ERP holds multi-level bills of materials — finished goods, sub-assemblies, components and raw materials — and uses them everywhere: to create production orders, to drive MRP purchase indents, to set inspection points and to cost each order. Change the BOM once and the plan, the purchase and the cost all follow.

Who it is for: Pothera ERP is built for Indian manufacturers with roughly ₹10–500 crore annual turnover whose multi-level BOMs need to drive planning, purchase, quality and cost from one source.

Built by Bsquare Solutions Pvt. Ltd., Noida · part of The Nambiar Group · 25 years in business · 1,000+ manufacturing and trading clients.

Bsquare’s take

“A BOM that lives in an engineer’s spreadsheet is a rumour. The day it becomes the single source for planning, purchase and cost, the arguments between departments stop.”

— Payal Nambiar, Managing Director & CEO, Bsquare Solutions

What a multi-level BOM holds

Level Example (auto component) Used for
Finished good (FG) Brake caliper assembly Sales order, dispatch, FG inspection
Semi-finished good (SFG) Machined caliper body Production order, WIP / SFG inspection
Component Piston, seal kit, bolts MRP purchase, inward inspection
Raw material Casting, bar stock MRP purchase, job work issue

Where the BOM is used in Pothera ERP

  • Production orders and sub-assembly orders are created from the BOM.
  • MRP explodes the BOM to raise purchase indents for shortfalls.
  • Quality inspections are set at inward, WIP, SFG, FG and pre-dispatch stages.
  • Job-work issues use the BOM to set standard consumption and tolerance.
  • Costing rolls up material, process and scrap per unit and per order.

Questions to ask any vendor

  1. Levels: How many BOM levels are supported, and can sub-assemblies have their own orders?
  2. Changes: How are BOM changes approved and dated?
  3. Use: Does the same BOM drive planning, purchase, quality and cost?
  4. Migration: How will our Excel BOMs be cleaned and migrated?
  5. Alternates: How are alternate materials handled?

Frequently asked questions

What is BOM software?

BOM software stores the structured list of materials, sub-assemblies and quantities needed to make a product, and in an ERP uses that list to plan production, buy material and calculate cost.

What is a multi-level BOM?

A multi-level BOM shows a product as a hierarchy: the finished good, its sub-assemblies, their components and raw materials, each with quantities. It lets an ERP plan and cost every level.

What is the difference between a BOM and a routing?

A BOM lists what a product is made of. A routing lists the operations, machines and times needed to make it. Together they drive material and capacity planning.

How do you calculate BOM cost?

Multiply each material’s quantity per unit by its rate, add a scrap allowance, then add process cost — labour, machine and overhead — per unit. Our free calculator rolls it up.

Does Pothera ERP support multi-level BOMs?

Yes. Multi-level BOMs drive production orders, MRP purchase, inspections and costing in Pothera ERP.

Can BOMs be migrated from Excel?

Yes. BOMs are typically migrated from Excel or a legacy system during implementation, after cleaning duplicate items and checking quantities.
